Todd Layne Cleaners and Laundromat of the Upper East Side in NYC, Is Proud To Be Eco Friendly. Of the 35,000 dry cleaners in the United States, 85 percent use perchloroethylene, more commonly known as perc, as a solvent in the dry cleaning process. There are a number of reasons that perc is dangerous for your health and the environment.
-Perc is a synthetic, volatile organic compound that poses health risks and a threat to the environment. Minimal contact can cause dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and headaches.
-Extended exposure to perc can cause liver and kidney damage as well as cancer. It can enter the body through water contamination, skin exposure, or, most frequently, inhalation.
-The US Environmental Protection Agency has found that clothes dry cleaned with perc can raise levels of the toxin throughout a home. Nursing mothers exposed to perc may emit it in their milk, placing their infants at risk.
Perc’s adverse effect on health and the environment has prompted a number of dry cleaners to search for better alternatives.
Todd Layne Cleaners and Laundromat is leading the effort towards eco-friendly practices with the elimination of dangerous chemicals in the cleaning process. We offer two distinct non-toxic dry cleaning methods, one of which uses only water and natural spotting agents. Our Wash and Fold equipment uses 30% less energy than standard machinery. We promote the use of Seventh Generation detergent, which is derived from plant oils and contains no NPEs, compounds that are very harmful to our nation’s waterways. We encourage our clients to return used hangers and are part of a pilot program which uses recyclable hangers for a percentage of our dry cleaning.
