Todd Layne Cleaners, Upper East Side, New York explains “Invisible Stains”.
Invisible stains are not an urban legend. It sounds improbable, even impossible, but invisible stains do exist. These kinds of stains are tricky because they usually don’t show themselves until after the garment has been cleaned.
It’s happened to everyone. You are out with friends and you spill something on your shirt or pants. At first, it looks like your clothes are ruined, but then, a few minutes later, the stain has disappeared. Poof! Just like that! Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Some clothing stains cause by beverages may not be visible after they dry. But later, with exposure to heat or simply the passage of time, a yellow or brownish stain will appear. This is the end result of oxidation or caramelization of sugar or sweetening agents. It is the same process that makes a peeled apple turn brown after exposure to air.
According to the National Center for Garment Analysis, these stains are difficult to remove because they have had the time to ‘set’, but it’s not impossible. As always, the chances for successful stain removal are increased the sooner you bring the garment to be cleaned. Bring in your garment to Todd Layne Cleaners and Laundromat as soon as you get that stain!
