While it may seem complicated to have your laundry (often referred to as Wash and Fold) done in NYC, it’s actually pretty easy. Maybe you just moved to NYC or have never sent your laundry out before. We are going to explain some of the ins and outs in this blog and give you a few tips on a few things to watch out for in answering the question of how wash and fold works in NYC.

I wrote another blog that provides lots of information on pricing and the ways that businesses cut corners or disguise the fact that they don’t actually have a presence in NYC. Option 1 – Bring your Wash and Fold to your local Laundromat (cheaper option)

• Bringing your laundry to a local laundromat is generally cheaper than having it picked up and delivered
• The number of laundry and dry cleaners in NYC has dropped by about 50%, so check for local laundromat’s websites, number of years in business and Google reviews
• If you don’t see washers and dryers or a laundromat at the storefront, it’s not a good sign. This means that they outsource laundry to a factory in Brooklyn or Queens with industrial washers and dryers which aren’t good for your clothes
• At Todd Layne Cleaners, we have our own laundromat in our storefronts and never wash customer’s clothing with anyone elses

Do a little research and bring your laundry to a local Wash and Fold store in your neighborhood. Check their website, number of years in business and Google reviews. If you don’t see washers and dryers or a Laundromat in their store, that’s not a good sign and means that they probably outsource your laundry to a factory in Brooklyn or Queens that uses industrial washers and dryers. For your laundry, that means having your clothes washed with someone else’s (we’ll get into this later) and having your clothes dried in industrial dryers. Option 2 – Schedule a Pickup and Delivery of your Wash and Fold in NYC

• Having your laundry picked up and delivered is the easier option, but generally costs more money
• There may be a separate charge for delivery, but some laundry companies provide this service free with a minimum order
• Multiple options are usually available for scheduling, including by scheduling online and calling

What should I put my laundry in if I am sending it out?

• There are very creative ways of sending laundry out in NYC, everything from a garbage bag to an entire hamper from someone’s apartment
• If it’s your first time sending out laundry in NYC, use a laundry bag. If you don’t have one, use a hefty-type bag and request a laundry bag on your return trip.

What is the typical turnaround time for Wash and Fold Laundry?

• Typical turnaround time for laundry is 24 hours to 48 hours
• Busiest days for laundry companies are Monday and Tuesday
• If a laundry company offers same day service and doesn’t have their own laundromat, it could be a sign of rushing or not doing the best job
• Laundry companies with their own laundromat sometimes offer same day service
• At Todd Layne Cleaners, we offer same day laundry service if you drop off by 10am or have a pickup scheduled by 10am. If we are operating at capacity, we may charge a small fee of $2.99.

The busiest days for most Wash and Fold laundry  businesses are Monday and Tuesday. If an online Wash and Fold company offers same day service for your laundry without their own laundromat, it may be a warning sign that they are rushing and not doing the best job with your laundry. What about Special Requests, Baby Laundry or Allergy Sensitivities?

• Some specialized laundry companies can accommodate special requests, baby laundry or laundry for customers with allergy sensitivities
• Dedicated washers and dryers should be used for baby laundry and allergy laundry

• Laundry companies that don’t have their own laundromat lose control of the process and may be outsourcing laundry to a company that mixes customer’s clothing together with someone else’s.
• Make sure that the Wash and Fold Laundry Company has their own physical storefronts and laundromat in NYC for the best experience

There are many “laundry” companies that come up in search results in NYC that are nothing more than an app. Companies like LaundryHeap only have a website platform and outsource your laundry to another business or industrial plant in Brooklyn or Queens. In addition to the issues with getting laundry back that isn’t properly cleaned, you may be out of luck if something is missing from your laundry. Make sure that the Wash and Fold company that you choose is has physical storefronts and there own laundromat in NYC for the best experience. What if the price per pound for laundry is low?

• There are many ways of cutting corners in the laundry business
• One of the biggest tricks is to place customer’s laundry in mesh bags and wash them together in the same washer

There are many ways to cut corners in the laundry and Wash and Fold business. One of the primary ways that low price Wash and Fold operators save money is by placing customer’s laundry in mesh bags and washing them together in the same washer. I’m not sure about you, but it certainly doesn’t sound good to me. Now your clothing is being washed with random peoples dirty clothing and you have no idea where its been. Dryers are industrial strength at very high temperatures to dry clothing as quickly as possible, but the result is shrinkage and fabric damage.

Since the pandemic, there are many fewer laundromat’s in NYC. Prices can range from about $5.00 to $8.00 for a two load washer to $9.50 to $13.00 for a four load washer. Prices to dry generally range from about $4.00 to $6.00. At Todd Layne Cleaners, we have our own laundromat in our storefronts and charge $7.00 for a two load washer and $11.00 for a four load washer. Drying is 25 cents per 2 minutes.
